Two U.S. federal marshals raided a booth at the Consumer Electronics Show Thursday because of allegations the company that staffed the booth was selling counterfeit products, Bloomberg Business reported.
The booth belonged to Changzhou First International Trade Co., a Chinese company that sells a version of "hoverboards" that balance on one wheel. A rival company, Future Motion, alleges the hoverboards look strikingly similar to their own product and so alerted law enforcement. Future Motion does not have a booth at CES but "a half-dozen" people from its legal team accompanied the marshals in their raid, according to Bloomberg.
CES, which is run by the Consumer Technology Association, is one of the largest trade shows in the U.S. The association does not police claims by companies who feel competitors are violating their patents or trademarks. However, such allegations are so common the association has rules for exhibitors who confront rivals. "Loud, offensive and embarrassing confrontations" are prohibited at CES, and exhibitors are limited to no more than two employees, a lawyer and a translator when confronting a competitor.
Bloomberg reported the Chinese employees at Changzhou First International Trade's booth had trouble understanding the orders of the marshals. The hoverboard on display was packed up and taken away by law enforcement, as were several brochures and promotional materials. Afterward, the booth's employees milled about until eventfully leaving. http://bloom.bg/1S8uUTo
